Why did Edward Ratchett kidnap and kill Daisy Armstrong in the Orient Express Book?

Daisy Ridley in Murder on the Orient Express

Not Daisy Armstrong, but her name is Daisy!

Multiple years before the events of Murder on the Orient Express, Cassetti (Edward Ratchett) and his gang kidnapped Daisy Armstrong, Colonel Armstrong’s daughter.

They collected the ransom of $200,000, and after the ransom had been paid, Daisy’s dead body was found, having been dead for at least two weeks — suggesting she was killed before the ransom was even collected. Cassetti was put on trial, but was acquitted due to bribing and blackmailing various officials.

Addendum: This was not the case in both of the film versions. In those, Cassetti fled and was never tried

Kidnapping Motive

The reason Ratchett kidnapped Daisy was entirely for the ransom money (her family was extremely wealthy).

However it is never explicitly stated why Ratchett killed her — theories suggest it was due to authorities nearly closing in on Ratchett and his gang
